How do you keep sofa cushions from slipping forward on a sofa? We have an overstuffed suede-like fabric sofa. The velcro strips underneath the cushions don't hold them in place. When we sit on the sofa the cushions slip forward and at some point I have to squash them all back into place. Is there any way to keep them from slipping forward? I've noticed other sofas with this same problem - overstuffed or not.

Bonnie C replied: "When we got a wood futon, with a canvas covered mattress, they gave us a long sheet of that rubbery, kind of knobby (woven looking?) like, shelf liner stuff that we lay between the wood and mattress.....we use it as a couch......."

elementoflife replied: "YOu could try getting pieces of the no-slip mesh - it's that stuff you can buy so area rugs don't slip around on floors. I used that on an old couch of mine and it seems to work ok (you just have to make sure that they stay clean because when they build up dust and crumbs, they don't 'stick' as well). Other than that, maybe you could put an old throw cover under the anterior portion of the cushions (along the length of the couch) so that the cushions tilt towards the back of the couch, rather than the front - which may hold them in place a little better. Cheers I forgot to add, you can buy the no slip stuff at ikea or even walmart. I think you can also look in the kitchen area because they make the stuff for drawers too - so that your utensil tray doesn't move around..."

M S replied: "Try shelf paper--the kind with the holes, and is sticky on one side. I think "Duck Tape" makes it, and they sell it at Walmart. I have some placemats that are kind of "non skid" like the shelf paper, and they do a pretty good job, so I haven't bought the shelf paper yet. Annoying problem, isn't it? Good Luck!"

water marks on sofa covers, how do i get rid of them? My sofa is kinda creamy colour, and a few months ago we spilled some sauce on it..... i used vanish stuff on it suitable for sofas and i'm happy to say the stain came out perfectly! Only thing is that now i'm left with a water mark where i wet the cover to clean it. How can i get rid of that? The sofas made of kind of velvety stuff so isnt machine washable, the lable says "professional clean only" but i just need a wee bit cleaned, not the whole thing.... any ideas? Thanks!

bill b replied: "wash em"

Paul Rules replied: "Are you sure the mark isnt where the sofa's been cleaned and its the fact that the rest is dirty making it look out of place? Get it all cleaned, dont be tight!"

st33lgr1p replied: "Have the sofa covers dry cleaned to remove any stains that may be left on the covers, they will look good and smell lovely and fresh, because if you wash them in the normal way the covers might shrink a bit, and we don't want that, for if they do shrink they wont fit back on the sofa, good luck"

My sofa moves on the floor, no carpet underneath, what can I do to make it immovable and constant? Its hard to sit on the sofa, as it slids back when we try to sit on it. I am redecorating my living room, so I need to put something under the sofa legs to make it stand still. Help please. Also, suggest what more to add to living room. I only have flat tv, tv stand, a chair, sofa, tea pot, a lot of empty space and dining table behind the sofa. I am going to add painting frames on the walls. Suggest any thing else that I can try to add. Thankx.

DZNR4U replied: "A nice well made Area Rug would do the trick and add to your decor. Use one of the no-slip rug pads under the rug. but ,if that is not in your budget or you don't care for the rugs, the hard ware store, or big box retailer sells little clear rubber "stoppers" I guess would be the word. They have a peal off paper side with sticky glue underneath that you can stick onto the feet of your sofa. Suggestions for the empty space: Add a sofa table, a cocktail table, side tables and lamps. Along with the rug, this should fill up your empty space and add homeyness to your living space."

D G replied: "Most hardware stores carry 4 pack packages of little rubber cup-like coasters that will help keep your sofa firmly in place and prevent any sliding- unfortunately, I cannot recollect offhand just what they are called. However, if you go into any hardware store and describe the probelm you are trying to eliminate, they will be able to direct you to them. Artificial plants are a good way to fill up blank spaces as are wall decor items, such as sconces and pictures. If your walls are painted white, you can try repainting them in a warmer color- that is complementary to your sofa color. Or you can simply sponge one of your favorite colors onto walls that are painted white. Even if you've never sponged before, it's easy and looks great when done. You can also purchase a small area rug that has some of the same color as your walls and/or sofa. Doing that will help to tie the room together- and you can accessorize your sofa and/or chair with throw pillows in either similar or contrasting colors- and perhaps throw a colorful afghan over the back of your sofa or chair. On the table behind your sofa, you can place a colorful table runner with some candles and place silk flowers in your teapot. Whatever colors you decide to use- just make sure they complement one another. Warmer colors such as gold, green, orange, red, brown and rust will make your room feel cozier- colors such as blue, gray, pale green, black, white, & violet will make your room seem cooler. Have fun decorating!!"

What is the best way to clean a micro-fiber sofa? I have a sectional sofa that is a very light cream color. It is made from that suede like, micro fiber (that is supposedly easy to clean). Well, our newest dog was having a little trouble with accidents on the couch, and I am having trouble cleaning them. The initial stain and odor was easy to get out using sofa or upholstry cleaners. However, our sofa is now covered in small rings. It has left a ring around each stain I have cleaned, like a watermark. I have tried to clean those, but just get newer, bigger watermarks. How can I stop this cycle? What is the best way to clean a sofa like ours? Its only a year old, but I'm so frustrated, I'm about to buy a new sofa. Help me please!

tessasmomy replied: "My microfiber pieces are dark colors so I am not sure if it will work for you but I use baby wipes."

Portland Mom replied: "When we bought our microfiber couch the salesperson told me to use rubbing alchohol for spots or spills. Sounds harsh but it works! I don't get any rings, you can't tell that anything spilled at all. I'm not sure if all micro-fiber is the same but maybe you could try rubbing alchohol (on a cotton ball or small cloth) on a part of the couch that's hidden?"

shelbygt5001967 replied: "hello, i was reading your question and i think...i think now, not i know.. i think if you use some kind of dye like the color of the couch maybe that would work. since you have the stain out now it's clean. lol make it dirty with dye but with the color you want it to be. if this doesn't answer your question i'm still glad to help. see ya."

How do you clean a sofa bed? well i had my sofa bed for about 3 months and i think its time to clean it. what do you use to clean a sofa bed.

D W replied: "Most futon beds have a zipper on the side. you take that of and wash it and febreze the hell out of the inside. or take a rug doctor to the whole damned thing"

WestVillageHomekeeper replied: "I would treat a sofa bed and mattress like a regular one -- with a little added attention. Using the mattress attachment, give it a good vacuuming on both sides. Spot treat any stains. If it does have a cover, follow the label for washing instructions. Getting the mattress itself wet isn't a good idea if you can help it as it's really hard to completely dry. If you can take it outside, that will help freshen it up. If you haven't already done this, a good step to keep it as clean as possible moving forward is to add a mattress pad or cover. Launder/change the linens every week as you would for a regular bed."

How do you get a sofa checked for chemical irritants? Recently I've been suffering painful skin rashes & other itchiness. It seems to have started about the time we bought a leather sofa a few years ago. Is there a way of checking if the sofa is the cause of the problem?

bluebottle replied: "The BBC watchdog programme exposed this problem some time ago ...if you go to ....http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2009/03/dramatic_new_twist_in_sofas_sa.html it does give some details of the affected types"

annieR replied: "Contact Leatherwise in Northampton. They will have details of the problems and can do the specific tests rquired for this type of problem. "

Where can I get a SOFA depicting scenes of the BAYEUX TAPESTRY? I am looking to purchase a Sofa that has a tapestry print fabric depicting scenes from the BAYEUX TAPESTRY. I do have photos of the sofa that I am looking for. INFORMATION on Retailers or Manufacturers Name would be great, thankyou.

Jennifer replied: "I'm not sure where you can get a sofa exactly, but this site has the tapestry if you are willing to get an upholsterer to do a couch for you."

Jack R replied: "The manufacturer Multiyork used to make them a few years ago. Don't know if they still do but you could give them a try. "

How do you thoroughly disinfect a leather sofa? A friend has offered me a sofa - can't take it with her on a move. It is only a year old and very nice. BUT, she has 6 dogs. And all the problems that come with that. They have had mites, fleas, I am sure they have probably peed on the sofa, etc. I am wondering if there is anything you can use on a leather sofa - either store bought or made-at-home that I can use to clean and disinfect the leather. Thanks.

brat replied: "Why not go over there and sit on it,lay on it,smell it when she is not looking. It is leather..get a leather cleaner and clean it best you can. Vacumme the shit out of the inside of the coushions. Hell! Take the chance..leather couches are expencive! If it smells after all that..tose it!"

iluvmyfrenchbulldogs replied: "I would spray a flea/mite killer on the non-leather parts of the couch. Then I would use a leather cleaner on the leather, but you can also use Clorox wipes on the leather as long as you rinse it afterward. Just make sure that you spray the carpet where you will place the couch also with the flea/mite killer."

traveler replied: "Firstly, I would thoroughly vacuum the sofa under the cushions, underneath, on all the fabric areas, checking for obvious stains, etc - if there are any, I would sponge clean those and let the sofa air out for a few hours. The vacuuming and airing should deal with any flea eggs, etc if you are thorough enough. If you notice any urine odor, there are products to treat that, in the pet aisle or specialist pet store. Next, I would get a dishrag, using soapy water and wring it out well, wipe over all leather parts and dry, to remove dirt, then use leather cleaner to condition and protect the sofa. I clean my leather sofas with leather cleaner that is from the automotive dept. It is liquid that you apply with a cloth and then buff off with a dry duster. The sofa should be as good as new and last for years."

What color sofa should I put in a light gold room with a large black and white zebra print ottoman? Unfortunately Black or White will not work because we have pets and a baby and it will get too dirty too fast. We're looking for stretch slipcovers for our old funiture, and surefit doesn't have anything great. Also, we have a large black and white painting above the sofa. Please help! I was thinking burgundy too. I paid so much for the ottoman and I LOVE it, and I did the painting myself so I really want it in there!

vmburge replied: "RED!!!!!!!"

mochachreme replied: "Since you can't use the colors black or white, I would suggest a yellow or gold color that complements the paint color. Not an exact match but in the family. Why don't you just take the ottoman and picture out? Then you wouldn't be as limited to colors."

valima33 replied: "Deep reds, such as burgandy. Or a dark hunters green."

stephy replied: "Definitely REDDDDD"

yowza replied: "Terra cotta"

JK replied: "Red would be sweeeet. Something bold and warm."

sonnyboy replied: "Red or even orange but use a true red or a true orange."

MS.veronica_J replied: "a deep red would be nice or a grey color. But I suggest taking out a zebra print ottoman. you can get away with the painting as it will stand out in the room but if you put other black colors then it will be harder to put other colors other then black tones."

priyanka replied: "if Ur wanting dark colours then yes red ll do but not that shinny a bit dirty type coz Ur room is itself shinny so just take a dull colour coz only these coloUr ll compliment ur room so just make a try with an olive green or blue not exactly but shades of it so go out n match it up........... bye n tc"

plaplant8 replied: "How about a darker gold color to tie in the light gold of the walls?"

maddie d replied: "some type of pale green ( sage, pale green, etc ), maybe an orange, but not a bright one"

enigma replied: "plain avocado green (or lighter) sofa will bring out the classic style best in light gold colored wall you have and will also accentuate the color of the painting since you dont want to loose it there. since it is black and white the green sofa will create a balance on it. most importantly, find a sofa that is simple and not loud in the design and texture. because your zebra prints in the ottoman (which you dont want to put away also) and the painting is enough to create action on the space, the space will be heavy in the eyes for overdoing the prints so might as well choose sofa and other furnitures that are simple in color and style. goodluck:-)"

How do I stop my sofa sliding on carpet? My Sofa is set across my lounge and is not against a wall. Behind it is my PC trolley. Does anyone know any way to stop the sofa sliding? I have tried the non-slip mat you can get and it's helped but still isn't great as any weight on it compresses it and stops it working. Any ideas anyone? All I can think is a door stop behind the leg but that means damaging my carpet!

Ed replied: "In the US you can buy small rubber cups to set the casters in. Elsewhere, I bet a furniture store would have them, or know where to get them."
